Here are some of my favorite essential oils for relaxation that are in Little Moon Essentials products:

Lavender is the superstar in the essential oil world. It too has anti-microbial, fungal and viral activity to it. It also in an analgesic, sedative, antiaxiolitic, it helps with headaches, lice, cysts, muscle pain, digestive issues, depression, nervousness and many other mood disorders. It can also help with PMS as wellbeing. Lavender is a wonderful first aid remedy, especially for burns; it is among the safest and most widely used essential oils. Lavender was used during the Victorian times for fainting. There are over 350 studies on lavender  demonstrating everything from mood enhancement and balance to pain relief. It brings balance both physically and emotionally. I like many uses for lavender. For relaxation my favorite aromatherapy scent is Clear skies Ahead by Little Moon Essentials.

Rosemary:

Rosemary was burned in French hospitals to purify the air up until the 20th century. This essential oil is also an excellent anti-bacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It is an excellent antiseptic as well and why is was used in hospitals a long time ago. It is an excellent tonic and is very similar to lavender as far as uses but rosemary is more of a stimulant and lavender is more of a sedative or has a calming nature to it. Research has demonstrated that it helps with memory and cognition. Rosemary can be used in cooking. I have used the essential oil diffused to help in memory and recall for test taking. A great mixture to help with cognition is to use a few drops of rosemary, lemon, orange and lavender in a spray bottle with distilled water to lift mood.

Rose  Rose is a beauty favorite, It is used in many perfumes body oils and face creams. Egyptian rose, Rose helps ground and center you before bedtime. A recent study demonstrated aromatherapy with rose oil can reduce anxiety

Euclayptus: when we think of cough drops we think of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is used for treating the common cold and all its side effects like coughing, mucous, sinus infections sore throat. Other uses are for insect bites and itching. Eucalyptus oil also has anti viral, fugal and bacterial effects. My favorite use for eucalyptus is during a cold. I like to take a bowl of hot water and create a tent with a towel over my head draped around the bowl. I will put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in inhale the steam. It works wonders for any cold, or virus and opens my repository passages.

What is Crisis Text Line with Jen James

Crisis Text Line

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and before the end of the month, I wanted to share Crisis Text Line. During the Summer, I had the honor to interview Jen James, the creator of the volunteer curriculum and trainer of the original supervision team of Crisis Text Line.

Crisis Text Line was developed as part of DoSomething.Org when one of the workers, Stephanie Shih received a text that read “He won’t stop raping me” “it’s my Dad.”  Shih showed the message correspondence to her boss Nancy Lublin. Over the next two years, these women would develop what is now known as Crisis Text Line, the only 24/7 crisis-intervention hotline conducted via text message. Lublin recognized the high volume of people who were using text messaging as their primary mode of communication.

James’ role was to create a remote training program for volunteers all over the world. The requirements:

  1. A social security number for a background check
  2. 18 and over
  3. A good heart “We are not there to teach you to be kind, you should be kind. We don’t want dicks” -Jen James

Launched in March of 2014 with 20 people, today Crisis Text Line has over 4,000 volunteers and anyone can text “Hello” to 741741 if they are in crisis.

Jen’s Story

Jen has lived and personal experience dealing with crisis. Twenty-two years ago when Jen tried to take her life, there weren’t the resources available like there are today. Additionally, people did not talk about their problems, they were “swept under the rug.” Since then, Jen graduated as a film maker and continues to be both passionate and creative. She recognized her desire to help others who are faced with that moment of crisis. You can learn more about Jen here. 

Interested in becoming a volunteer?

You will learn the skills to help anyone with any issue they are facing. You do not need to be an expert in eating disorders, be Social Worker or Psychologist to volunteer. The conversation and the training which you go through will cover the issues which Crisis Text Line deals with.

The volunteers are not there to judge a crisis, because every crisis is different. They want to be there for anyone during their time of crisis.

Quinoa: Superfood Grain for your Skin and Body.

History of Quinoa

Quinoa has been around for thousands of years and consumed by the native people of Peru, Chile and Bolivia. In recent decades quinoa has made it into health food stores as a new superfood because of its high protein content for a grain. Quinoa consumed is high in amino acids, vitamin E and Lysine. These all help make collagen, elastin and contain anti-oxidants, all of which help to rebuild and repair the skin.

QuinoaRecently, quinoa is being used in cosmetics. Like with anything new in the cosmetics world, a plant must undergo studies to support any claims. There are two Quinoa studies cited in this article that show its promise for hair and particularly skin. This superfood is promising for diminishing fine lines, brightening the skin, and helping heal acne scars.

A study in the Int J Cosmet Sci. in 2015 demonstrated that quinoa contains tyrosinase inhibitors, an enzyme that decreases pigmentation and therefore brightens the skin and has been shown to be effective in reducing brown spots and hyperpigmentation keeping skin bright. Being rich in Riboflavin, a B vitamin, Quinoa helps with the production and regulation of melanin. The physical symptoms of aging skin are lessened through the reduction of intracellular oxidative stress and MMP (matrix metalloproteinases) enzymatic activity, and tyrosinase enzymatic activity.

Quinoa has the ability to help recover damaged skin and reduce aging of the skin and skin damage. Ecdysteroid is another compound in quinoa (J Biochem Mol Toxicol) that helps reduce damage and oxidative stress, helping to recycle skin matrix, particularly the structural proteins, collagen and elastin in the skin and aids acne scarring.  Its antioxidant properties help reduce the aging process by rebuilding skin from matrix metalloproteinase) enzymatic activity.

QuinoaQuinoa grounded like other scrubs made from grains, has a gentle husk or outside covering. Many women from Andean countries like Peru, Bolivia and Northern Chile have been using Quinoa to gently exfoliate their face for centuries. Make sure to use quinoa that is gently ground. Mix with an organic skin oil or water and gently rub into the face. Rinse with a damp cloth and make sure the quinoa doesn’t block the drain. If you don’t want to make your own there are several new products on the market using quinoa as a main ingredient.

When consumed as food, Quinoa is extremely high in antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals, and can help fight aging and several diseases. In a 2009 study, researchers found that among five grains, three grasses, and two legumes, quinoa had the highest antioxidant content of all. Compared to other foods, quinoa demonstrated superiority in disease reduction.

Quinoa protects against oxidative stress, which can damage and age skin and hair. It is important for readers to realize using quinoa alone will not cure their skin and hair issues. It is, however, another wonderful botanical that has demonstrated efficacy in treating hyperpigmentation and reducing oxidative stress.

Journaling to Relieve Stress and connect with your Mind and Soul

Right now with the hurricane ready to barrel down on all of Florida I thought I would share this post in hopes that people would read it before their power went out. If you are reading this some other time or place, the practice of journaling can help you in times of stress and help you connect with you mind and soul and relive free flowing anxiety.

Journaling

There are many ways to connect with your mind, heart and spirit, especially in times of hard ship. Journaling is a way to engage the creative spirit within you and get out what is called “free flowing anxiety”. I myself have used this during times throughout the last 20 years and I encourage my patients to use this exercise as well. You do not need to be a world class writer to journal. In fact, I keep a picture journal instead. Next to my bed is a lovely Italian paper journal. In a bedside drawer I keep a pair of scissors, glue stick, and pages of magazines, newspaper or even greeting cards with images that I love or resonate with an emotion that I might be feeling at the time. These images sometimes have relevant text written on it and sometimes no text at all. It only takes a few minutes to cut out images and glue them into the journal. I will write a few words that expresses what I am feeling or just leave the montage of photos without any words.  This exercise has become so popular that my daughter, who was young when I began this process, regularly requested to make a journal page with me, especially if she was  home sick or if something emotional in her life has happened. It is amazing to look back through the pages of the journal and reflect upon life’s passages.

Journaling Keeping a journal helps free your mind. You can write, use imagery and if you’re really talented keep many thoughts in your journal. With the hurricane on the way, I will be using this opportunity to write without distraction and hope channel what is deep in my subconscious mind. I encourage all of you who are down here  in Florida to do the same in the hours we won’t have power or  those who may just feel lost in this difficult time.
