My Magic Mud: Charcoal that Whitens your Teeth

My Magic Mud: Charcoal That Whitens Your Teeth

My Magic Mud

A year ago, if someone would have asked me what first comes to mind when I hear the word charcoal, I would have said something along the lines of “a grill” or “ a cookout”, but today, the first thing that I think of is toothpaste, specifically My Magic Mud ®; an activated charcoal, fluoride free toothpaste.

Created by Jessica and Justin Arman, My Magic Mud was first developed in Jessica’s kitchen as a solution for her daughter who had incredibly sensitive teeth susceptible to cavities.

The ingredients:

  1. Coconut shell charcoal
  2. Calcium bentonite clay
  3. Organic mint extract
  4. Organic orange peel extract.

Although they seem simple, these ingredients all play a significant role in the toothpastes performance. The coconut shell charcoal is activated though a scientific process and then used to draw out bacteria and toxins from your teeth’s pores. The calcium bentonite clay strengthens enamel and boosts your mouth’s immune system. The organic mint extract acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and the organic orange peel extract is a natural tooth whitener. When all these ingredients are combined you have a messy, but wonderful toothpaste.

Justine states “We believe in natural alternatives to toxic chemicals. Fluoride isn’t needed for strong, healthy teeth, especially not in our drinking water.” Since we tend to swallow toothpaste, fluoride goes through your intestines. Even worse, according to the Global Healing center, Fluoride is one of the most dangerous chemicals known to man.

My Magic Mud is also vegan, cruelty free, gluten free, non-GMO. If there was ever a charcoal toothpaste to try, this is it, especially since it is dentist recommended.

So why is Charcoal good for you?

It has detoxifying strengths like being able to grab onto everything ranging from dangerous chemicals to dirt and oil. Though limited medical research has been conducted, activated charcoal is a form of carbon which is a rebirth of ancient medicine techniques along with being used in African tribes as a form of teeth cleaning. Charcoal attaches to everything it crosses paths with, like stains, tartar, bacteria and even viruses.

Journaling to Relieve Stress and connect with your Mind and Soul

Journaling To Relieve Stress And Connect With Your Mind And Soul

Right now with the hurricane ready to barrel down on all of Florida I thought I would share this post in hopes that people would read it before their power went out. If you are reading this some other time or place, the practice of journaling can help you in times of stress and help you connect with you mind and soul and relive free flowing anxiety.

Journaling

There are many ways to connect with your mind, heart and spirit, especially in times of hard ship. Journaling is a way to engage the creative spirit within you and get out what is called “free flowing anxiety”. I myself have used this during times throughout the last 20 years and I encourage my patients to use this exercise as well. You do not need to be a world class writer to journal. In fact, I keep a picture journal instead. Next to my bed is a lovely Italian paper journal. In a bedside drawer I keep a pair of scissors, glue stick, and pages of magazines, newspaper or even greeting cards with images that I love or resonate with an emotion that I might be feeling at the time. These images sometimes have relevant text written on it and sometimes no text at all. It only takes a few minutes to cut out images and glue them into the journal. I will write a few words that expresses what I am feeling or just leave the montage of photos without any words.  This exercise has become so popular that my daughter, who was young when I began this process, regularly requested to make a journal page with me, especially if she was  home sick or if something emotional in her life has happened. It is amazing to look back through the pages of the journal and reflect upon life’s passages.

Journaling Keeping a journal helps free your mind. You can write, use imagery and if you’re really talented keep many thoughts in your journal. With the hurricane on the way, I will be using this opportunity to write without distraction and hope channel what is deep in my subconscious mind. I encourage all of you who are down here  in Florida to do the same in the hours we won’t have power or  those who may just feel lost in this difficult time.

Indie Beauty Expo, New York City, Some Personal Favorites

Indie Beauty Expo, New York City, Some Personal Favorites

Indie Beauty Expo, Personal Favorite Roundup

After returning from a whirlwind week in New York City I wanted to share some of my personal favorites from IBENY 17 (Indie Beauty Expo).  I was first introduced to some of these brands in May at IBE Dallas and am confidently retain them on the top of my list.

The brands that won me over meet a variety of prerequisites such as their low carbon footprint, personal mission statements, high quality ingredients and mindfulness towards health, not to mention their appeal to a wide range of consumers:

Kindred: I met Frances, the owner, at IBE Dallas and visited with her again in NY. Driven by her own skin challenges she created a line of high quality, organic oil based skin care. I love all the aspects of her products from the beautiful fragrance to the delicate nature of the non-greasy oils. Her cleansing oil is appreciably light which is unique among the crowd of organic cleansing oils. Kindred’s facial Oil Cleanser helped me break a 25-year habit using a market-leading Japanese cleansing oil.  Also, her facial mask clays are formaldehyde-free, a known environmental toxin.  Their newly released Eye Treat, which contains caffeine and botanicals, is a new favorite of mine. It’s perfect for my puffy allergic eyes and I use it morning and night. It’s perfect or those mornings when I wake up like Hitch. Kindred just released a solid moisturizer baton, which is compact and TSA-friendly for travel. As an added bonus, I love that the packaging on all Kindred products is designed for protection while travelling and it’s reusable. Many of the products have a light sandalwood fragrance.

Luk Beautifood: This luscious lip nourishment company from Australia really drew me in with its packaging (wrapped in reusable fruit-printed cloth to clean computer and phone screens) and its edible food-grade ingredients.  Women ingest a lifetime of lipstick pigments, waxes and petrochemicals that contain heavy metals and toxic pigments, which are endocrine disrupters accumulating over a lifetime compromising our immune system (read more here). The fact that Luk Beautifood contains food grade ingredients places them at the top of my list. In fact, I had one for a snack on my way to JFK (JK).  The company’s owner is a food scientist with years of experience behind herself in food testing, creation and preparation.

Luxe Botanics: This beautiful South African brand is sourced from high quality oils and fruits from South Africa. Not only is it brilliantly made, backed by science but a portion of proceeds go back to the communities that produce their core botanicals in Kenya, Brazil and Malawi. From Nature to Nuture, we love this brand. They have three core botanicals: Marula Oil from Kenya, Camu Camu Berry from Brazil, and Kigelia Africana from Malawi. Their products are made with pure botanical ingredients in combination with compounds synthesized from natural and organic bases. They are ethically harvested with science behind them. Luxe Botanics are vegan, cruelty free, and ethically and sustainably sourced. The founder and creator studied biotechnology in Australia. She had a successful nine-year career working for pharmaceutical in both Australia and Singapore, before deciding to pursue her dream of creating Luxe Botanics.

L’odaites:  This tiny gorgeously packaged line is from France.  With only five products, this line is derived from natural pure extracts from fruits, flowers or seeds.  Using the fruit sugar from dates is an interesting concept. Through cold processing they maintain the integrity of the active ingredients. These date-based products are rich in minerals which support healthy skin, including the synthesis of collagen and elastin. A study in Pakistan treating facial skin with date extract improved elasticity, pigmentation, redness, brightness and hydration.  http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/cosmetics4020013

Osmia Organics:  This line was created by Dr. Sarah Villafranco who left Emergency Room medicine to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Drawing on her medical background and after a lot of experimentation she created Osmia, a broad line of beauty products derived from consciously-sourced plant materials. Although I didn’t get to spend that much time with her, I was highly impressed by her line. Her personal story is compelling to all of us who are too afraid to make a change no matter where you are in life. I tried her Nectar vital rose drops and loved them. Her spot treatment which is used for breakouts is tea tree oil free making it ideal for people with sensitive skin.

Little Moon Essentials:  This all-natural affordable line is one of my favorites.  All the products are organic and made in Colorado. Their wonderful organic bath salt soaks are calming and restorative and I have personally used their products for years. It is a way to bring nature into your bathtub.  I love their Clear Skies Ahead room spray, Dream Cream, and sugar scrubs.  They have a cooling spray, called Lift Off, which is great to use after a day at the beach or when you’re experiencing hot flashes or both. This brand is very affordable for people looking to transition to green products. You can read more about detoxification through salt bath therapy here.

Olverum: This brand is simplistic and singularly focused producing a gorgeous German cult bath oil. The smell is out of this world.  We met them at IBE Dallas and can’t get enough of their formulation of plant extracts, specifically selected for their traditional therapeutic properties. Olverum provides a luxurious synergistic nighttime experience from bath to bedtime. This treasured olfactory treat from the 1930’s has us swooning for it today.

Element Candles:  Another company we met at the Indie Beauty Expo in Dallas and happy to see them in NYC has a unique collection of candles that are as clean as you’re going to find. Most people with allergies and respiratory issues must be careful of candles. They may contain heavy metals in wicks, toxic fragrance, petrochemical derived wax and they produce soot that gets into the air exacerbating respiratory illnesses. This candle has none of that.  As an asthmatic I can get behind a product specifically designed to avoid all those problems.

Indie Beauty Expo

Seen above: The Blackout from The Makeup Mitty and Element candle.

Mitty: Say “goodbye” to disposable wipes! The Makeup Mitty helps you clean up your act without messing up the planet.  This company offers large sizes for the face and a mini size for your eyes and other tiny areas. This product is a reusable low carbon footprint wash mitten. It is gentle enough to use on the most delicate skin.  These Mitties outperform and outlast wipes and washcloths and in the long run reduce your carbon footprint. Being overly fastidious about my products I discovered that the Mitty can also double as a cleaner for cosmetic brushes.

Source Vital:  These friends from the Indie Beauty Expo in Dallas and NYC have two products I’m crazy about:  Deozein Zest deodorant and their Tranquil Multi spray.  We have been crazy for their innovative clean roll-on deodorant for months.  Making a switch to a clean deodorant can be tricky for some people during their transition from conventional products. Especially in hot locales like here in South Florida, it can be a smelly experience no matter how clean your diet is. We put it to the test. This deodorant performed wonderfully. It even survived Miami Swim Week castings. Deozein Zest is not just a cover-up, their formulas eliminate odor for both men and women. Source Vital formulates their deodorant with pure essential oils, natural mineral salts and seaweed extract, all known for controlling bacteria that cause odor. Source Vital is a broad-range company that has many full lines and custom formulas, but I had to mention our favorites.

Ayuna, Less is Beauty:  This beautiful high-end line from Spain offers a small line of theory based products.  We especially love their volcanic glass and carbon mask. This very gentle mask helps to draw out impurities, reduce skin sensitivity and leaves your skin feeling radiant and rejuvenated. The collection is elegant and complete.

Stay tuned for future writings on H&H as we continue to review other outstanding brands from the Indie Beauty Expo Dallas an New York.

Can my Lipstick cause Cancer? Green beauty, keeping you safe and beautiful.

Can My Lipstick Cause Cancer? Green Beauty, Keeping You Safe And Beautiful.

Taking a step towards Green Beauty

Years ago, green beauty products without synthetic chemicals were deemed less than glamorous and not highly sought after, other than by die-hard health fanatics. Aside from health food stores and specialty boutiques it was very hard to access organic beauty products with demonstrated efficacy and quality. Healthy and organic are now hip, becoming more mainstream everyday as traditional stores have hopped on the bandwagon. According to Transparency Market Research the Organic Beauty Industry will be a $13.2 billion industry by 2018. This figure has doubled since 2012 demonstrating that consumers want more from their cosmetics.

Conscientious women are taking a more discriminating look at their personal care products and cosmetics thanks to increased awareness of studies that clearly demonstrate what makes us beautiful may also cause long term collateral damage and disease in our bodies and hurt the environment. Personal care products contain many dangerous chemicals and environmental pollutants including phthalates, (cosmetics, perfume, nail polish, liquid soap, hairspray) parabens, heavy metals and endocrine disruptors that are linked to serious health problems, including breast cancer and other female based cancers. These chemicals are bio-accumulative which means they build up over time taking up residence in your body. This is a growing area of concern as research accumulates about the potential health effects for the ecosystem and for human health (Rahman, 2009). What we eat, put on our skin and breathe is metabolized via the liver and the 80,000 chemicals present in our environment, many of which are present in personal care products and cosmetics, can cause irreversible harm.

Green Beauty
The rise in demand is led by two key demographic segments according to NPD Group analyst, Karen Grant, environmentally aware millennials ages 18 to 25 and health-minded people age 40 and older. This is the essence why we created Haute and Holistic. Consumers are attracted to boutique brands represented be genuine people. Many green and organic beauty products are the brainchild of need, spawned be their creators who themselves or a close family member had persistent skin issues and other ailments that weren’t being remedied by traditional cosmetic companies.

Green Beauty

Enter Indie Beauty Expo. Indie Beauty was founded by celebrity esthetician, Jillian Wright, and entrepreneur, Nader Naeymi-Rad, the Indie Beauty Expo was established just two short years ago to fill a growing niche marketplace targeting unmet market needs. Unsatisfied with the options available, Jillian and Nader formed IBE to provide a solution specific to market-ready indie brands. IBE supports the fast-growing category of indie brands by connecting them with buyers, press and consumers. For years many consumers either had to go to health food stores, make their own cosmetics, or purchase products online without the benefit of in-store testing.

I have been a veteran of the green beauty movement for twenty years. As an integrative medicine contributing author to one of the first medical books discussing botanicals in skin care (Cosmetic Dermatology – Principles and Practice by Dr. Leslie Baumann, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, “Alternative Medicine”) along with countless natural magazines, I was thrilled to learn about this beauty expo last year. This past spring, my daughter, Charlotte, and I had the opportunity to go to Dallas and meet many innovators in the green beauty movement along with IBE founders, Jillian and Nader. It was an incredible experience to see so many hard working and passionate individuals and entrepreneurs concerned with the environment, our body’s health and beauty, both inside and out.

Green beauty is no longer something associated with your old hippie aunt with hairy armpits. It is glamorous, fresh and innovative. Currently, indie brands are sought out in almost all market demographics. Stores from Target to Neiman Marcus have begun selling indie brands to fill growing consumer demand for more transparency in their cosmetics and wellness brands.

According to Bloomberg Business Week the latest acquisition targets are Indie Beauty brands. (March 30, 2017) Indie beauty brands have strong social media presence and their founders interact more personally with their followers than traditional market brands. Women these days want full disclosure of what they are buying and moreover putting on to their faces and bodies.

The following interview with founder Jillian Wright was conducted by Charlotte this past May, about Indie Beauty. It is our hope to educate our readers about the importance of clean beauty, why it is beneficial for you and the environment and how it supports small business owners.

We are here to help you make intelligent decisions and educate you how to stay healthy from the inside out. Stay tuned for more green beauty interviews, product reviews and all things wellness. Please support Indie Beauty, Jillian Wright and indie beauty brands by following them on their social media channels and Haute and Holistic on You Tube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

7 Weird, But Effective Ways To Treat Your Acne, According To Chinese Medicine

7 Weird, But Effective Ways To Treat Your Acne, According To Chinese Medicine

We are so proud of our Haute and Holistic contributor, Dr. Elizabeth Trattner for being featured in Bustle on 7 Weird, But Effective Ways To Treat Your Acne, According To Chinese Medicine.

We are so proud of our Haute and Holistic contributor, Dr. Elizabeth Trattner for being featured in Bustle on 7 Weird, But Effective Ways To Treat Your Acne, According To Chinese Medicine.

“There are a number of ways you can approach treating acne, whether you opt for topical creams, a diet change, or some new skin care products. You may not have thought to turn to Eastern medicine for some advice, but there are some interesting ways to treat your acne according to Chinese medicine. If you’ve tried different tricks and tips and still find you suffer from breakouts, you might want to give your hand at a new unique approach.

‘The beauty of Chinese medicine is that it looks at the root to see what is happening with the patient,’ says Dr. Elizabeth Trattner, A.P., D.O.M. is a Florida and National Board Certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture over email. ‘There are several different ways we treat, including herbs, acupuncture, and dietary therapy. All of those facets will have a treatment woven together to help balance and fix the patient’s acne.’

In Chinese medicine, acne is most often seen as “heat” in the lung and stomach meridians, according to the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences. Excess heat in the body rises up to the face. Another cause of acne in Chinese medicine is dampness. ‘Dampness is caused by too much cold food, oily food, dairy, and processed foods that allow the body’s energy to not transform and transport nutrients,’ says Trattner.

With all that in mind, you might want to try some different remedies to help balance your body out.”

Our First Giveaway: We love Source Vital!

Our First Giveaway: We Love Source Vital!

Happy Wellness Wednesday everyone,

To launch Haute and Holistic , we are doing our first giveaway of the natural skin care line, Source Vital Apothecary! They are an all-natural skin line who have been promoting organic and natural for the past 30 years, way before natural and organic products were popular in the skin care world. This company uses only plant based ingredients, Today, many skin and beauty companies contain parabens and toxic chemicals which have been known to cause large range of health concerns like cancer, neurological disorders and even learning disabilities.

Deozein Zest Spray  Night Repair Cream 2oz  first giveaway

I’m not the only one in love with this line! Source Vital was one of the exhibitors at the Dallas Indie Beauty Expo and was ranked as a “Buyers Favorite” I am so excited to share this wonderful line with you! By entering this Giveaway you have the chance to win:

  • Deozein Natural Deodorant (Original) = $16.95 (retail)
  • Deozein Zest Natural Deodorant = $16.95 (retail)
  • Night Repair Cream = $49.95 (retail)
  • Algae Deep Scrub = $32.95 (retail)

The wonderful thing about Source Vital’s Deodorants is that it protects your body from odor causing bacteria, but unlike other “natural” deodorants, it does not inhibit your body’s natural functions. Additionally, they are not tested on animals, but on Source Vital employees so you know it works. It isn’t so hard to switch to a natural deodorant. In fact, it was quite easy for us. We love the roll on and the smell is incredible, even when you sweat. A thing to consider, especially in the summer is to drink more water and eat more vegetables during this time to help flush out all the toxic by products in conventional deodorant. These are two full size products which will keep you smelling gorgeous for a long time. Many women today are switching to healthier options to help protect our bodies in reducing our toxic load, especially with deodorant.

The Night Repair Cream is great for moisturizing and hydrating your skin. It is made with seaweed, plant extracts and essential oils which both nourish and restore young looking skin to provide your skin with a more youthful glow. Safflower oil is a great choice for sensitive skin. Green tea extract is a proven anti oxidant which helps protect skin against free radicals and sun damage.

The Algae Deep Scrub is great and is one of Source Vital’s best sellers. This product contains seaweed and peppermint, along with natural corundum crystals which help cleanse the skin free of dead skin and dirt. It will leave your face feeling both refreshed and nourished. Because this product uses corundum  crystals it won’t hurt the environment like most conventional scrubs do.
